little doan

so we have created a flat stanley type of concept, between etherington, smart mike, myself, and alex we should be able to give him quite the adventure. So far he’s been mountain biking a few times -

The mountain biking doan >> here

and even on a first date with mike and suzie

dating doan >> here

I’m pretty sure he’s getting more action than I am too, little doan > big doan ? perhaps.

wrong turn in albuquerque

So I’m rolling through the summer, barely keeping up with life and the what not, but I am really loving it.  This summer has been very kind to me, especially seeing how I’ve had some great times at home, in the short time I’ve been there, followed up by a few great weeks of EFY (Especially For Youth) and the opportunity to work with some great kids.  I’ve been through Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and now today I’m heading to Geneva New York for my last EFY session, probably ever.

We packed up this morning after searching out a meager breakfast that was surprisingly unavailable for a college campus, and then packed a van full of 8 of us counselors, our luggage, and the office luggage for the 4 hour (max) drive to Geneva, NY, ie Rochester area.  Well we’d been driving for a while, just following our google map directions to a T, and not paying to much attention to the time.  So we take a step in the directions and go north on highway 89, waiting for exit 42, after a few hours, there comes a sign that says 5 miles to Canada.  Christy, our driver begins to question our positioning, and pulls over to confirm our route.  We hit a Mobil gas station in Champlain New York, and Christy and Steve go in to check on the route, then Christy comes out doubled over in laughter yelling for all of us to come in and see the map for ourselves.  We walk in and the lady at the register is patiently explaining our plight.  Where is Geneva we ask, she points to a spot a little bit in on the left hand side of the atlas, to which we nod and reply so where are we now, and her finger dramatically traces a line across the page and up to the very top right corner of the state and stops in Champlain.  Still not quite grasping the gravity of the situation, we ask innocently, how far away is that?  6 and a half hours she replies, at which point all 8 of us begin laughing hysterically taking pictures of the map with fingers pointing, some running out to the parking lot and renting our clothes in dramatic fashion calling for ashes, as we hysterically begin to realize our 4 hour drive and day to catch up on rest has turned into a 12 hour drive and a scenic route unsurpassed.  We laughed and laughed, then get in the car and begin driving, Steve takes over to ensure no more mistakes.  About 30 minutes later we get pulled over, and despite our best attempts, we begin laughing hysterically again.  The cop asks innocently “So, where you coming from?” Massachusetts we reply, where you headed he asks, Rochester New York we reply, and were rewarded with a quizzical expression which elicits another round of hysterics from the car.  He had to have been wondering about substance abuse or alcohol consumption, but Steve, bless his heart, explains dutifully, “We’re counselors for a youth camp for our church, see my name tag (points to his tag that says Steve as if to prove his innocence)” then the cop asks him if he know why he pulled us over, and again, bless his heart, Steve ventures in with “cause I was going 20 mph over?” the cop replies “well my radar didn’t get you that fast but yeah” the cop then “when do you have to get there?” steve instantly responds “tomorrow by 7pm at the latest” unknowingly condemning his case of need or even reason to be speeding, but all the same, grins respectfully at the cop as the 7 of us act like hyenas laughing and rolling around at every comment.  In the end, Steve got his first ticket, and we’re currently on hour 12 of the drive, still hoping we’re heading in the right direction while waiting for our destination to arrive.  In short, we’ve been rewarded with the ever elusive adventure found only in upstate New York while traveling from Massachusetts.

Good times. :)

Life o’ Doan

So misty (see little brother Jakes wife) has requested that I give up some of the juicy details of my life for her entertainment pleasure. I thought this was a great idea until I realized that I have very few juicy details to give up right now. I will be honest, I’ve tried hard lately to get some juicy details, but no matter how much I want to, I just can’t make myself be a man-slut. I go into dates with the manly intention of grabbing a cheap make out and running, but then I just feel guilty for compromising my standards and what not, then in the middle of the deliberation, the girl will spout off something ridiculous like “Do you think I’m stupid cause I’m transferred here from BYU Idaho and not BYU Provo?” or the always popular “are you mad at me?” at which point all ill conceived dirty pleasure is forgotten and the girl is promptly taken home to wallow in her insecurities or whatever it is that makes the women I’ve been going out with lately be the way they are. And it’s not just one either, I can’t figure it out. But without fail, I’m always grateful that I held to my guns and didn’t end up getting “involved” with one of the crazies. Blessings all over I reckon. So there’s my juicy gossip, the more I date, the less I like it, I’ve actually taken to BBQ’ing some brats with the roomie and inviting married couples over to play games on the Wii, we laugh, have fun, eat well, and don’t have to worry about poor susie who can’t figure out the nun-chuck controller, or betty who doesn’t realize that the controller is a pointing device. I am finding more satisfaction in losing myself in math, or SIFE projects than I have found in love, so for the time being, I’ll leave it at that. Programming and saving the world via SIFE, that is the Life o’ Doan.

Summer ’06

This summer has been one of a kind for me. I have never packed so much into such a short amount of time in my life. I have been on more adventures, seen more sights, met more people, had more adventures, and accomplished more life goals this summer than in any summer previous. It is amazing to me all the opportunity I’ve been afforded. Continue Reading…

we’re going to chernobyl

So being over here in Ukraine has been great, and despite all the jokes and ignorant comments about Chernobyl made to me in my visits to Ukraine, I haven’t ever really seen the effects of Chernobyl in my travels. I mean you hear stories about it from people who were here, stories like the black cloud over Kyiv, a city 4 million strong forced to flee to the far reaches of the country, or of babies being deformed, firefighters and police men dying at the ripe old age of mid twenties due to their being called to duty. Those kinds of stories, but the places I’ve lived haven’t shown any effects of the largest nuclear disaster in the history of the world, so accordingly it has been a stretch at best, for me to try and understand the meaning of the word Chernobyl, Continue Reading…

wooking pah nub in all da wong pwaces

aight so it’s been a couple of weeks here in Ukraine and life is good. Ukraine is just like I remember except for the food. As a missionary we didn’t get to eat a lot of the food, and now I’m getting a full array of said food during my breakfast hour. It’s great, but sometimes you gotta give the body time to warm up first before it can handle pounds of gambled sausage. err that was a little dirtier sounding than intended, but still, it’s always a good time. Also, my ability to choose “in date” drinkable yogurt seems to have left me, as I’ve come away from the yogurt experience a few times with unexpected results. Essentially the 3×3 rooms that are home to the squatting areas we use for our fecal discharge are used to their fullest. ahhh yeah.

Our group here is kind of funny, we have a nice array of randomness. Our girls have all pansied out and refuse to experience our good country. It’s a common mistake made by pansies, and just makes me appreciate this place even more. But so far as anything real to say, I don’t have much, pretty much I won’t be regular till I get home, and half my group is unexpectedly gay. I heart teh Ukraine though, and I love everyone, especially Valerie Day, my favorite bitter chick, not to be confused with Ms. Featherbottoms, my favorite British chick.

Oh, and one other thing, I’ve found a new love, Arrested Development. It’s a comparable show to News Radio, and is great. Some funny funny stuff. Props to Geoff and Loren for taking me to such new heights. God bless.

Ykraina!!

Well I’m here, in Ukraine I mean and life is amazing. It is so good being back and I’m having a blast. I’m getting more Ukrainian food than ever, able to see more cultural events and be a little more rowdy than was acceptable as a missionary so it makes for a different kind of enjoyment. Specifically when I attend sporting events I’m a whole different ball game baby, :) Anyway, hopefully I can get a real post and pics soon.

Enjoy,
