a little love for the byu-h women’s soccer

I love sports, especially out here, I’ve grown to love our teams, and got a good laugh out of this article, and felt like this deserved to be mirrored here, :)

Going against a powerhouse of women’s soccer, the Seasiders hosted the third ranked University of California-San Diego. Losing the game 1-0, the Seasiders dropped their second game of the season.

Though BYU-Hawaii took to defeat, the stands were not short of fans. Alan Doan rushed to the game after making a speech at the International Business Management meeting, not even taking time to change out of his suit. “I feel like they are my girls, I can’t let them down,” said Doan. Doan shouted encouragements and playful remarks from the sidelines throughout the game.

Freshman forward, Alexa Page from Layton, Utah displayed her famous side-line flip-throw over six times during the game, keeping spectators’ eyes on the game. The Seasiders out-shot the visitors 4-2 in the second half and continually put pressure on the San Diego defense.

Playing against Hawaii’s own Chaminade University, the Seasiders shut-out Chaminade 2-0, putting their first win on record.

BYUH never gave an inch as the Lady Seasiders put 29 shots on goal, leaving the Silverswords with 0, proving their complete domination of both the offensive and defensive aspects of the game.

“Jill Haar broke through for the Seasiders in the 27th minute with a point-blank shot from right in front of the goal with an assist on a nice pass from Kristi Astin and a tip of the ball by Sarah Welty,” said Scott Lowe of sports information.

Though the Seasiders were hot with shots during the game only two hit net, as Chaminade’s goalie, Marissa Martin, made 14 saves for the Silverswords, deflecting shot after shot from the lady seasiders.

“BYU–Hawaii Co-Captain Sarah Norton led a stingy defense for the Seasiders that kept the ball away from the Seasider goal all game. Astin, Kristina Nibley, and Britt Nielsen also stood out defensively for the Seasiders as the defense did not allow the Silverswords a single corner kick in the match, either,” continues Lowe.

The Lady Seasiders will take the field again on Sept. 18 in Arizona, facing off to Grand Canyon University. Grand Canyon’s record is currently 0-4-1 while BYUH stands 1-2-1 in the season.

The Seasiders will stay on the mainland until Sept. 26 battling four other schools before they work their way back to Hawaii. BYUH will have their next home game on Oct. 1 at 4 p.m. against Utah’s Weber State University.
